Ms. Pinkston was my elementary school art teacher. She was my very first introduction to everything from color theory, watercolors, abstract painting, and most of all; Frida Kahlo. I remember her art room being decorated with Kahlo's self-portraits, as she glided across the room trying to help each of the rowdy 30+ kids one by one. I loved Ms. Pinkston, and when I left Gompers Elementary for a much quieter, but much less comfortable private school, one of my only connections to my old school was through her. My new art teacher turned out to be an old friend of Ms. P, and when she realized I was a former pupil, Ms. Maw-Deis also made sure that I was well taken care of in my new environment. I hadn't gotten the chance to speak to Ms. Pinkston directly since childhood, instead opting to pass well wishes through Ms. Deis, but I recently received a large print of Frida Kahlo, and I couldn't help but think of her. I am heartbroken to find that she had passed, but I know that for her good works and kind heart, she rests well. Thank you to all of the artists, art enthusiasts, and kind people that you have inspired, Ms. Pinkston. Your memory remains a blessing.

Prayers for the family of Janis. Janis was a classmate from Germantown High School. I always thought she was a soft spoken person but with a creative spirit that captured your attention. May she rest now from her labors on earth.

I had the privilege of being in the classroom across the hall from Miss Pinkston. I watched her create many wonderful, creative projects with her students. She had Fashion Week at Gompers where they created shoes using construction paper and displayed them throughout the building. They made Tap Taps, the colorful busses found in Haiti using recycled materials. One day my old wooden desk chair was missing. Janis took the chair and decorated it with recycled tile pieces. This led to her creating beautiful mosaics in the school and other buildings. A beautiful soul who left a beautiful legacy for us.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Janis?
A: I met Janis by way of the School District city wide meetings. It was always a fun day for all of the art teachers on those days because we got to renew friendships with old and new people.
Janis was always kind, patient and reserved. She was also a talented and dedicated artist who loved to travel to see art exhibits and invite us to join her.
We will miss her.
Rest in peace , Janis.
Deepest condolences to her family also.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Janis?
A: Janis was a Comedian
On January 14,2023 I texted Janis that I cared for her and loved her like a blood sister.
Janis response was "Now Janet what does being a blood sister entail? I've only ever had a brother, and although he is very kind and gentle now, he was kind of violent growing up. Now I know from hearsay that sisters have an entirely different way of torturing one another that may not be violent, but is equally painful, so if you could spell it out for me that'd be great.
My response was " Are you sure you're not a comedian! You have me Laughing!!!

Janis and I were friends from early childhood in Hollis Queens...while that was so long ago that I remember very little than just thrills from silly things like thrills from stealing bits of candy from the candy store..I do remember a great long trip we took to Boston a year or two ago stopping at various places in Connecticut to make the drive easier. Janis was so kind and warm and giving with such a great love of the arts...she always encouraged that part of me. We will miss you but you stay in our heart. Pam Ransom

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and loved ones at this sorrowful time. I met Janis in October 2015 at another very sad occasion, the passing of her Dad, William Broadwater Sr. From that point on, Janis and I shared warm conversations via phone and emails whenever our busy schedules allowed. I admired Janis’s amazing artistic talent and her ability to teach and encourage others. I felt touched by her gentle spirit, which came through either responding in an email or even over the phone. Janis was always encouraging, positive, and giving towards others. Soon after we met, Janis gifted me with an unframed print of her beautiful “Americana” acrylic painting. I immediately had the print matted and framed, where it hangs to this day in my office. I can glance up at the picture daily and think of Janis. She possessed so much talent and love to share.
I feel blessed to have gotten to know Janis over the last eight years. Even though we lived at a distance I felt her kindness from afar. I will cherish my memories of you, Janis.

Janis was a truly beautiful woman whose talent was overwhelming. I taught with her for years at Gompers Elementary School and through her instruction the students turned out the most beautiful artwork. It was amazing as was Janis’ own work, especially one card that showed a city scene with a mosque, a synagogue, and a church. Included was a flag that said PEACE.
Janis is now at peace with HER favorite artists. How lovely for her. She is missed. ❤️❤️

To the family of Janis Pinkston, a prolific visual artist that exhibited in our art gallery for group exhibitions in Los Angeles, California. Janis was highly respected as an artist among her peers in Los Angeles. Artfully Spaced Gallery directors along with her fellow exhibiting artists, were not only graced by her talent, it was Janis' calm demeanor and uniquely exquisite art techniques which gained her Awards of recognition. Janis always was a delight to watch instruct art workshops as other artists were honored to have her join us for two spectacular years.
Your legacy lives on Janis Pinkston!
Love and strength to her family!
Sincerely,
Sibyl Walton, Sylvia Mackey,

On behalf of my Sister Deborah Cox I would like to express my deepest sympathy’s to Janet’s Family during this difficult time
Janis and my Sister Deborah were very good friends from the time they first met as College Freshman in 1969 at Antioch College. Deborah, unfortunately, developed early onset Alzheimer’s. Despite her illness Janis remained a steadfast friend, calling regularly, when in town taking her shopping and lunch, and in general ensuring that Deborah had what Janis thought she needed. Janis was also a very good and supportive friend to me. Her kindness to Deborah was helpful to me as a caretaker. Janis, as is known, is a Notable artist. She honored our Artfully Spaced Gallery on two occasions in 2019 and 2020 by exhibiting her extraordinary artworks with us. Janis had a quiet out loud personality and was a beautiful and caring person who will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

Janis and I reconnected at our 50th high school reunion and became walking buddies. We walked outdoors in Chestnut Hill and at Morris Arboretum weather permitting, and in Plymouth Meeting Mall in winter. Last October while walking Morris Arboretum, we took issue with how the judges had rated the scarecrows on display for the annual community scarecrow design contest. We toured gardens during the Mt. Airy Learning Tree’s Garden Tour last June. I had a ball at a small 4th of July picnic at her home. We loved talking about our sons, our time in the school district, and the beauty of nature. Imagine my joy when Janis surprised me with two hats she had crocheted for me. Although our time together was short, the memories will last forever. I so regret that we were not close in high school, but how we caught up and cherished out later-in-life reunion! Rest well, my friend.
