Obituary of Sadie Mae Wade

Please share a memory of Sadie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sadie Mae Wade, daughter of the late Levy and Dora Byrum, was born April 10, 1918 in Monroe, North Carolina. She departed this life at Penn Presbyterian Hospital on February 10, 2023 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her siblings-Myrtle, Leatha, Johnny, Marie, and Paris. Sadie was married to the late Vernon Wade, Sr. and was the mother of seven children, six of whom preceded her in death: Bernard, Dwight, Jerry, Jimmy (Bulla), Vernon, Jr. (Tyni), and Jackie (who died at birth). Sadie was educated in the Union County School District. After migrating to Philadelphia, Sadie worked as a Home Care provider for Dr. Dalessandro in South Philadelphia. After Vernon, Sr. retired, together they opened Wade's Grocery store, formerly located at 54th and Conestoga Street. Sadie's home was always open to her sons and friends. She loved hosting parties for family and friends and was devoted to her "boys" and her grandchildren. Sadie resided in West Philadelphia, having moved there in the early 50s. She was the only and oldest living resident left of the original residents of the 5500 block of Master Street. Sadie was block captain for many years and always took pride in keeping her block clean and beautiful. Sadie loved gardening flowers and grew some of her own vegetables. Sadie's favorite place was Atlantic City. She loved the slots at the Casino's. She also went to Vegas and stayed on the go. She enjoyed going to flea markets and on shopping sprees. Sadie was all about family, especially her boys and grandchildren. She was always interested in what was going on in each of their lives. Sadie was so proud that she lived to see the first Black elected to the Presidency of the United States. She was so happy to call Mr. and Mrs. Obama her president and first lady. Sadie attributed her longevity to honoring her parents. During her lifetime, she took care of her mother, children, grandchildren, and anyone else in need. If you came to her store and didn't have money, she would let you have what you needed anyway. She always prayed every day and spoke often about being a "good person" and doing "good." She truly believed in the "Golden Rule;" "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." She leaves to cherish fond and loving memories of her life: her son, Malik Wade; daughter in law, Faiqah; eighteen grandchildren: Vincent, Tarik, Twana, Sakinah, Tahnisha, Mujahid, Hassan and Husain (deceased), Hanifa, Raiyna, Tiffany, Shareef, Nafisah, Aquib, Khalil, Aliyah, Malika, and Shahadah; Forty six great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
