Honor departed loved ones this Thanksgiving by incorporating special traditions that remind you of their enduring love and presence.

Thanksgiving is a time to come together with loved ones and give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. For those who have lost someone dear, the holiday can be bittersweet. While we celebrate the present, we can also take the opportunity to remember those who are no longer with us and ensure their legacy is woven into our traditions.

To make the holiday more meaningful, we have outlined seven ways you can honor departed loved ones this Thanksgiving.

1.     Share the memories you’re most thankful for.

Many families have the tradition of going around the dinner table and sharing what they are thankful for on Thanksgiving. This year, take the opportunity to share a special memory about your loved one that has always meant a lot to you. Was there a particular gesture that made you feel truly appreciated? Or a funny or heartwarming memory that still brings a smile to your face? Sharing these moments honors their memory and allows everyone to reflect on the positive impact they had on each of their lives.

2.     Attend your loved one’s favorite event.

If your loved one had a special event or tradition they enjoyed every year at Thanksgiving—whether it was attending a football game, watching the Thanksgiving Day parade, or another favorite activity—continue that tradition in their honor. Gather your friends and family and attend the special event, keeping their memory alive by doing something they loved. Not only will this bring comfort, but it will also create new memories with your family as you celebrate the life of your loved one.

3.     Set up a collective memory table.

If you’re hosting Thanksgiving at your home this year, consider creating a collective memory table dedicated to your loved one. This special table can serve as a tribute to their life and the impact they had on your family. Invite your guests to bring photographs, small mementos, or personal notes to contribute to the display. You might even encourage people to write down their favorite memories or stories to share after dinner.

4.     Serve their favorite dish.

Perhaps your loved one had a passion for oyster stuffing, creamy mashed potatoes, or your homemade sweet potato pie. This year, consider making their favorite recipe and serving it at your Thanksgiving table. Get everyone involved by inviting other family members to join in the preparation or share their own versions of the dish. Making this special food together brings a sense of closeness that will make your Thanksgiving meal feel even more personal and meaningful.

5.     Attend a remembrance service.

During the holidays, many places of worship and cemeteries offer services of remembrance, providing families with an opportunity to pay their respects to departed loved ones. These services often include uplifting music, inspirational or religious readings, and other meaningful rituals designed to help the grieving process. They offer a space for reflection and connection, allowing those who have lost someone dear to honor their memory and find comfort in the shared experience of remembrance.

6.     Light a candle in their memory.

As you gather around the Thanksgiving table, light a candle in honor of the departed. The soft glow can serve as a symbol of their presence and offer a moment of quiet reflection. You might choose to say a few words in memory of your loved one and invite everyone to recall the impact they had on your lives.

7.     Make a donation in their name.

This year, instead of spending a fortune on Black Friday deals, consider making a donation in honor of your loved one. Whether it was a charity they supported, a cause they were passionate about, or a community organization that held a special place in their heart, making this contribution can be a powerful way to extend the legacy of the departed. By supporting those in need, it keeps their spirit of giving alive during the holiday season.
