Mistake #1: Ditching the doctor
You might feel fine and look great, but one of the most important things you can do for your health is to visit your health care professional (HCP) regularly. Medical attention is not only helpful for acute ailments like the flu, but it is also essential for good long-term health. Skipping appointments also results in missing out on important routine screenings and vaccinations.
Mistake #2: Trivializing snoring
Are you sawing logs at night? Nearly half of men who snore have obstructive sleep apnea. It’s more than an annoyance. Sleep apnea can pause breathing for several seconds and is linked to heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure. Your doctor should evaluate any snoring that causes daytime sleepiness or affects your ability to think clearly.
Mistake #3: Neglecting oral health
Men are more likely than women to fall short on their brushing habits and not visit the dentist as often as experts advise. Good oral hygiene helps prevent bacterial buildup in the mouth that can become the source of life-threatening infection. Skipping dental checkups and neglecting oral hygiene have also been linked to chronic health issues like heart disease and diabetes. Visit the dentist twice a year and maintain good oral hygiene with daily brushing and flossing.
Mistake #4: Ignoring elimination issues
If you urinate more than eight times a day or more than twice at night, it might be more than a nuisance. It could be a sign of a medical condition such as an enlarged prostate, overactive bladder (OAB), or even some forms of cancer. Discuss it with your physician.

More men than women are diagnosed with skin cancer. Mortality rates associated with melanoma are also higher in men. Many of these deaths could have been prevented with sunscreen use. Men and women of all ages should wear sunscreen regularly. Taking the time to slather it on could save your life.
Mistake #6: Falling short on exercise
Most adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. However, only one in four men actually meets these goals. A sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of physical problems and mental health issues. Exercise triggers the release of beneficial brain chemicals that can ease stress, improve mood, and boost energy. Regular physical activity also reduces the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and certain cancers. Always consult your primary care physician before starting any fitness program to determine if it's safe and appropriate.
Mistake #7: Poor dietary choices
Most men fall short on their intake of produce while overdoing the red meat, starches, and fried foods. Doctors suggest four to five servings each of fruits and vegetables per day for a heart-healthy diet. Noshing on lower-carb veggies and fruits reduces the risk of stroke, cancer, and digestive problems. It helps keep blood sugar stable, too. Fill your plate with tasty produce, flavorsome whole grains, and brain-boosting fish.
