Honor Your Departed Veteran on Memorial Day with these Touching Tributes
Most people associate Memorial Day with the unofficial start of summer.
The holiday is often celebrated with barbeques, shopping, or trips to the beach over the long weekend. Being with loved ones is one meaningful way to spend the day, but it's also important to remember fallen soldiers and veterans, especially if you have lost a loved one who was a member of the United States Armed Forces.
Here are six ways to get back to the true meaning of Memorial Day and pay tribute to those who deserve our utmost gratitude and respect.
Learn about the origins of Memorial Day
Memorial Day was not meant to be a celebration. Rather, it was intended to be a somber occasion to honor the nation’s fallen soldiers. Originally known as Decoration Day, it began after the Civil War, which divided our country deeply. Decoration Day provided an opportunity to begin the healing process by coming together to honor those who died during the war.
Participate in a Memorial Day tradition
Over the years, Memorial Day has grown to include traditions such as special ceremonies, programming, and wearing the red poppy of remembrance. As the COVID pandemic begins to ease, some places are scheduling Memorial Day parades and other festive events. Do some research to find out what your locale has to offer on this special day.
Observe a moment of silence
Set a reminder for 3 PM local time so you can take part in the National Moment of Remembrance. The observation, which formally began in the year 2000, calls Americans to voluntarily and informally take a moment of silence at this time. Use it to quietly reflect on the sacrifices made by military men and women to secure our freedom and salute those who have given their all to defend our nation. If you have lost a military loved one, offer a special salute or blessing in his or her honor.
Show your patriotism by wearing red, white, and blue (but not the flag)
Did you know that the American flag is not meant to be worn as an accessory item? It was never intended to be decorative, even though you'll see it cropping up everywhere as the summer months approach. Rather than sporting flag-emblazoned t-shirts and shorts, it’s better to go with a more generic red, white, and blue color scheme or star motifs instead.
Honor the departed by supporting living veterans
You don't have to wait until Veterans Day in November to show your support for America’s veterans. Many of these military heroes are in need of assistance whether it's in the form of clothing, accessing healthcare, or simply companionship. Veterans’ agencies and national organizations are always seeking financial support, as well. There are countless ways you can reach out and make a difference for veterans this Memorial Day. Charity Navigator is one places that offers a list of reputable charities providing wounded troops services, military social services, and military family support.
Visit your loved one’s final resting place
A poignant way to honor your departed veteran this Memorial Day is by visiting his or her gravesite, the location of his or her cremated remains, or some other place of personal significance. Leave a fresh bouquet or an American flag to signify your enduring love and remembrance.
