What Legacy Do You Want to Leave Behind? Here are Four Key Things to Consider

“Carve your name on hearts not tombstones.”

They say legacies are etched into the minds of others and the stories they share after we have passed away. And of course, we all want to do wonderful things that live on after we are gone. The most promising path to that kind of immortality isn’t through amazing feats or massive monetary gifts. Rather, it’s the result of simple things like humility, integrity, self-sacrifice, and thinking of others. Have you thought about how you would like to be remembered? You have a choice in the matter. It all comes down to how you live your life, the plans you make, and the messages you choose to convey.

Read on for some considerations to help you craft an enduring legacy that reflects what matters most to you.

Give thought to your charitable contributions.

Meaningful philanthropy doesn’t have to alter the course of history or require immense wealth. The vast majority of people do not lead extraordinary lives of accomplishment and position. However, you still have the power to make important contributions where it matters most in your daily life. For example, giving your time to your community, church, local schools, or civic organizations can vastly improve the lives of your family members, friends, and neighbors. The small community garden you initiate today may long outlive you and provide residents access to nutritious food for decades to come. Don’t be fooled into believing that your actions are inconsequential. Your life matters and every charitable deed is worthwhile.

Practice compassion.

Empathy leaves a profound imprint on both the giver and the receiver. It leads to mutual happiness, peace, and greater connectedness. Be intentional in your efforts to strive to understand the hardships and struggles of those around you. Practicing compassion is the best way to create joy now and leave a positive legacy when you are gone.

Celebrate your accomplishments.

Do you sell yourself short when it comes to acknowledging your successes? Although it isn’t uncommon, rest assured that your efforts are worth recognizing. Raising your children and grandchildren, for instance, is an important part of your family history. It is an amazing feat and a wonderful legacy to leave behind in the world. Whether you are a loyal employee, a superb cook, or a formidable chess player, take time to revel in what makes you special.

Remember that you are the creator of your story.

Only you can control the narrative and how you want others to remember the life you have lived. Your life lessons and experiences cannot be reproduced by others, but they can be recorded and preserved for future generations. You might choose to share your story with your loved ones while you are living or you may prefer to leave it in the form of a legacy letter, journal, or video to be discovered after you pass away. The choice is up to you and there is no right or wrong way to impart your personal history to others.

We all have an opportunity to design our personal legacies. Choosing how you want to be remembered is all about the life choices you make each day. Discover your unique gifts and proudly share them with the world.
